The Old Church of Petäjävesi

was entered on the Unesco World Cultural Heritage List in 1991 as a well-preserved and unique masterpiece of Nordic wood architecture. The church was built in 1763-1765 by 12 carpenters under the leadership of the master builder Jaakko Klemetinpoika Leppänen. His grandson Erkki  Jaakonpoika Leppänen built the belfry in 1821. The church is open in summer time every day 10 am-6 pm. At other times advance reservations are made through the guide of the Old Church. The entrance fees are spent on the upkeep of the church and its services.
