Varanger invites you to enjoy new experiences in northern Norway and the Arctic Ocean
such as king crab safaris and deep-sea fishing, bird watching cliffs and the world’s northernmost fortress, salmon fishing and hiking in the arctic wilderness, Sami, Finnish and Norwegian culture, festivals and culture events, fishing villages and five seasons each with their distinctive colours. Varanger, situated in northern Norway in the arm pit of the Arctic Ocean welcomes all visitors inviting them to savour new arctic experiences.

Experiences from the coast to the virgin wildernesses

The fine hiking terrain extending from the fishing villages of the coast through the lush river valleys to the inland fells and gorges invite you to take a short or long hike. The cart trails crisscrossing the terrain are suitable for an ATV trip. The numerous salmon rivers of Varanger provide excellent fishing opportunities. The best rivers for salmon fishing are Skallelva and Komagelva in the east and Bergebyelva and Jakobselva in the west. Right at the border between Finland and Norway flows the river Tana, one of the world’s best known salmon rivers. The whole of the Finnmark coast offers excellent opportunities for sea fishing either from the land or out on the sea. You can rent a motor boat or join a guided fishing trip on board a traditional Norwegian fishing boat. What would it be like to catch a codfish, a sei fish or a halibut ? By boat it is also easy to approach the majestic Ekkeroy bird cliffs, to make the acquaintance of the puffin on Horoya island or to watch the seas and whales occasionally appearing in Varanger Fjord. The specialty of Varanger Fjord is the king crab, which can weigh as much as 14 kilograms and measure up to two metres in diametre. Welcome to join a king crab safari! You can relish king crab right on board the boat or go back ashore to enjoy a delicious crab dinner at a restaurant. A new and different way of becoming acquainted with the arctic environment is surely playing golf on the northernmost golf course of continental Europe, where golfing is possible day and night, even under the midnight sun.

The arctic winter invites the adventurer to Varanger, to the realm of colours
When the days get shorter nature changes colour, the green becoming the multicoloured brilliance of the ruska period. In winter all is covered by the whiteness of the snow over which the burning of the aurora borealis sheds special mystique. The warmth of the Gulf Stream, however, keeps the climate mild and the sea open all through the year. Every now and then a blizzard arriving from the Arctic Ocean covers the entire world in a white cap of snow upsetting the life in the towns and villages in a matter of minutes. However, snowstorms end as quickly as they begin and most of the time the visitor is pampered with an incredibly vast treeless expanse of snow under a high sky with the presence of the open sea always near.

In winter, you may begin your day with an early morning fishing trip on board a genuine fishing boat, in the afternoon you can go snowmobiling on the extensive fell expanses of the Varanger peninsula. In the evening you might pamper yourself with a sauna and a hot bath in a tub under the aurora borealis, in the world’s northernmost sauna complex.

Seal and whale safaris out to the sea, ski trips on your own or with a guide to the vast wilderness areas of Varanger with overnight stays at wilderness cabins, husky safaris and snowshoe trips in the moonlight or a guided kicksled trip on the footsteps of Umberto Nobile and Roald Amundsen will be experiences to enjoy at Varanger, forming lifelong memories.
