Sibelius' home town
Järvenpää, the home town of the great composer Jean Sibelius, is located in the northern end of Lake Tuusula. This town of some 37 400 inhabitants is located only about 38 km from Helsinki on the main northern railway and along the Lahti road and about 20 km from Helsinki-Vantaa airport.
Attractions
- Ainola. The best-known attraction in Järvenpää is Ainola, the former home of the Sibelius family, an imposing log house designed in 1904 by the architect Lars Sonck. Today Ainola functions as a home museum.
- Ahola. The origins of the artist community of Lake Tuusulanjärvi can be traced back to 1897 when the writer Juhani Aho and his wife, the painter Venny Soldan-Brofeldt settled there. Today an exhibition of their life and work is staged at Ahola.
- Järvenpää Art Gallery. The gallery presents paintings, drawings and graphics by Venny Soldan-Brofeldt and Eero Järnefelt. In addition, there are changing exhibitions.
- Villa Kokkonen. The home of the composer in which the heart of the building is formed by the large study designed round a grand piano.
- Järvenpää Hall. A high-standard concert and meeting centre providing concerts, exhibitions and facilities for even large-scale occasions.
- Little Aino’s Home. A place for children to visit.
- Pedestrian Street Janne. This pedestrian street leading from the railway station to Rantapuisto Park stages a range of occasions all year round.
- Kolmisointu. Finland’s largest public sculpture.
- Tervanokka. A swimming beach in the middle of the town.
Annual events
- Lakeside Blues Festival concert during the week following Midsummer Wednesday-Sunday, the main concert at Vanhankylänniemi on Saturday
- Tuusula Lake Chamber Music concerts at the turn of July and August
- Sibelius weeks in Järvenpää a series of concerts in autumn.
