The Karjaanjokilaakso river valley
An old industrial town (9 000 inhabitants) surrounded by peaceful wilderness and about a hundred lakes and ponds.
In Karkkila you can explore 180 years of industrial history in the Uusimaa Province, from traditional iron works all the way to modern export industry. You can also see art exhibitions or summer theatre and go canooing on the lakes and rivers close by.

- Högfors Iron Works
The Högfors iron works deep in the Karjaanjoki river valley form a fascinating world of their own right in the heart of town. Thanks to new residents and protective action the old idyllic workers’ residential quarters have preserved their historic character beautifully. Old industrial buildings have been restored and turned into new offices with full respect for tradition. Today a former engine shop houses the local library and Karkkila Town Hall etc.
- The Foundry Museum of Finland and Högfors blast furnace
A national museum illustrating the history of the foundry industry is situated in a park where you will also find a manor house commissioned in 1861 by the owner of the works Mr. Joseph Bremer as well as and restored blast furnace from 1823. The museum sells local cast iron art. The top floor of the museum houses Galleria Bremer, a space for changing exhibitions. Open: 2.5.-31.8. - Workers’ Museum of Karkkila-Högfors
This three-hectare open-air museum is a part of the Fagerkulla workers’ residential area. The restored houses and old yards paint a colourful picture of how the workers of the Högfors Iron Works lived in the 19th and 20th centuries. Summer café. Open: 1.6.-15.8, Wed-Sun 12-18, 0500-938 337
- Old wooden church
A cruciform church in rustic style from 1781 coloured with red ochre and designed by Matti Öisti, a famous church builder from Pohjanmaa.
- The Karjaanjokilaakso river valley with its rapids
provides idyllic natural scenery in the centre of the town.
- Market square
busy and crowded on summer market days, open Fri 8-13, in the summer an evening market Tue 12-18.
