The new Loviisa was established on January 1st 2010 when the muncipalities of Loviisa, Liljendal, Pernaja and Ruotsinpyhtää merge. (The old Loviisa was established in 1745). Loviisa is a bilingual town of 15 700 inhabitants situated on the Gulf of Finland, 87 km east from Helsinki.


ATTRACTIONS
The Sea Fortress of Svartholma, which is over 260 years old, is located on an island 10 kilometres from the town, at the mouth of Loviisa Bay. During the summer, there are cruises to the island every day; Guided walks on the island for children and adults. On the island there is an exhibition called “Svartholma – the island of soldiers, prisoners and tourists”. There is also a summer café on the island.
In the old district, the wing building of Degerby manor dating from 1695 houses restaurant Degerby Gille open by appointment. The majority of the buildings in the centre were designed by architect Georg Chiewitz. The Town Hall dating from 1862 and the neogothic Church dating from 1865, are generally considered the finest of them. The Town Museum occupies an 18th-century commandant’s house. The exhibits present the seafaring and spa eras of Loviisa. The museum also presents the youth of the composer Jean Sibelius in Lovisa. The Lovisa guest marina is located at Laivasilta. The area includes a row of old salt magazines which house, in summer time, a maritime museum, a café-restaurant together with exhibitions. Ungern and Rosen land fortresses. Ungern is a setting for many summer events and summer theatre performances. In the vicinity of the fortress is the 2-kilometre-long Ehrensvärd trail presenting the history of and natural environment of the fortification. Loviisa Nuclear Power Plant is located 15 km from the town centre.

EVENTS
The highlights of the summer in Loviisa include a number of memorable events. The Sibelius Festival is staged in June, The King comes to Loviisa, Small Ships’ Race and Backyard Rock in July, The Loviisa Peace Forum and the Loviisa Day Celebration take place in August. The national traditional and repair building fair ”Wanhassa Wara Parempi” is held in late summer and in December Christmas in Lovisa is celebrated.

The ironworks area dating from 1695 is the heart of Ruotsinpyhtää church village. The old industrial and residential buildings by the river, surrounded by old trees, form a milieu of great cultural historical value. Attractions include the forge museum, upper smith’s forge, the octagonal church and the handicraft workshops.

Viirilä local museum, open in summer, at other times on request. Ahvenkoski border ramparts a monument dating back to 1700. Kukuljärvi hiking trail, with a length of 8 kilometres goes through a fairly demanding terrain with alternating uphill and downhill stretches.

Within the ironworks area, you’ll find craft workshops, open in summer, at other times on request. In addition, the area comprises summerrestaurant, summercafé, hostel and art exhibitions in summer.
