Virolahti is the gateway to Russia. Virojoki is the com­mer­cial and administ­ra­tive centre of the municipality. Vaalimaa border station with res­tau­rants, currency exchange and other services has become a popular resting place among travellers.

Attractions
• Museotie Road: Road between Virojoki and Hamina is a 35-kilometre stretch of the King's Road, also called "the Great Coast Road", dating back to the 14th century and running from Turku to Viborg.
• Vilkkilän tura is well known for its bird and butterly habitats. In May in particular birdwatching enthusiasts from all over Finland gather there to watch the migration of arctic birds.
• Harjun Oppimiskeskus, an institute of agriculture in an old manor milieu.
• Virolahti church and stone sacristy
dating from the 14th century is open in summer, enquiries at the parish office, 05-357 1304.
• Heponiemi monolith quarry, which provided monoliths for the monument of Czar Alexander I and the pillars of St Isac's Church, both in St Petersburg.
• The bunker museum area,
