Alajärvi is the summer resort of architect Alvar Aalto’s family. The town boasts a number of buildings designed by him, e.g. the town hall and the parish centre. The Nelimarkka museum commissioned by the painter Eero Nelimarkka contains a collection of his works. The exhibition area of the Volcano Centre provides an opportunity to learn about volcanos and earthquakes. On the wine estate Punainen Tupa visitors can follow the wine making process and buy the products. A spectacular panorama opens from the observation tower of Suokonmäki hill.
