THE SPECIAL FEATURES OF THE TOWN INCLUDE:
Old Rauma was included in the Unesco List of World Heritage in 1991 as a representative of Nordic wooden town tradition. With its 30 hectares and 600 buildings idyllic Old Rauma, at the heart of the town of Rauma, represents the largest and most homogeneous wooden house area in the Nordic Countries. Most of the town’s attractions and handiwork and art destinations are located there. About 20 km from Rauma center, in a village of Lappi, there is another Unesco World Heritage List representative, the archaelogical site at Sammallahdenmäki.
Memorable experiences are provided by visits to three islands, all representing magnificent archipelago scenery: Kylmäpihlaja with its lighthouse, Kuuskajaskari, a former defence fortress and Reksaari with outstanding natural beauty. The Rauma Maritime Museum housed in the premises of the old Nautical School of Rauma presents the history of navigation.
