Säkylä is located on the shores of Lake Pyhäjärvi, the largest lake in south-western Finland and also richest in fish. Thanks to the vast expanse of water the Säkylä landscape resembles that of the seashore. The highest point of Säkylä Ridge reaches to 150 metres above sea level. The unique natural environment in its delicate peacefulness has made Säkylä a popular place to live and to visit for a holiday. Thousands of young male Finns make the acquaintance of Säkylä while doing their national service in the Pori Brigade stationed in the local garrison.

From the town centre and the Rantatie road the landscape opens straight out onto Lake Pyhäjärvi. In the town centre, Säkylä Church, designed by Antti and Mikael Piimänen and completed in 1776, is one of the finest wood churches in Finland. The church square also features a windmill, the symbol of Säkylä. The square serves as a venue for public events, such as the military ceremonies of the Pori Brigade.

The Katismaa area on the shore of Lake Pyhäjärvi has become a popular venue for a variety of activities, e.g. for people who go in for fishing, boating, for sauna bathers as well as for those who pursue cultural activities. The area includes a marina with fish booths and moorings for boats, a swimming beach with a sauna, a summer theatre, and a little further off, the Pihlava camp centre owned by the parish of Säkylä.

Culinary delights for gourmets:
whitefish ("siika") and vendace ("muikku") of Lake Pyhärvi, chicken or turkey with vegetables
