Toivakka is located east of Lake Päijänne half an hour’s drive from Jyväskylä. With more than 20 km of the rugged Päijänne shoreline, Toivakka is a popular destination for a great many holiday-makers. Toivakka Church was built in 1879-1882. In 1923, when the interior was renovated, it was the architect Alvar Aalto who planned, among other things, the paintings on the ceiling. In 1972-1973, when the interior of the church was repainted, the painting of the ceiling was entrusted to the Toivakka artist Pellervo Lukumies. His paintings depicting biblical characters and events were based on Aalto’s thematics. These highly personal paintings are in fact Toivakka’s most important tourist attraction.
