The municipality boasts some of the oldest traces of human habitation in Finland. The Finnish independence movement of the 1910s has strong links with the municipality. The Cable Wakeboard centre, which was opened in 2008 at Ukkohalla. Ukkohalla also includes the wellness centre Hallan Saaga & Saunamaailma. There is a wide choice of accomodation: hotels, cabins, loggers’ cabins, farms as well as camping sites in summer. Every summer Hyrynsalmi stages the World Championships in swamp soccer.
