Located on highway 5 and a major railway line halfway between Helsinki and the Arctic Circle. Iisalmi is easy to reach by road, by rail or even by water.

Iisalmi offers tourists a wide range of opportunities for recreation and activities. Since the beginning of the 20th century Runni Spa in Iisalmi has received guests for spa treatments. At the historical site of Koljonvirta you can visit the Juhani Aho museum and relive the atmosphere of the war between Sweden and Russia in 1809-09 by means of a multimedia show. At Iimäki, set in a magnificent rural landscape, you can visit Iimäki Heritage Farm. In the centre of the town there are also interesting attractions, e.g. Evakkokeskus and the Orthodox Church, both displaying old Orthodox-Karelian culture. In the Brewery Museum you can learn about the history and present day of brewing. In the Natural Museum housed in the Culture Centre you may learn about the local environment and the Local Museum presents life in the Iisalmi region in bygone days.

The colourful events arranged in Iisalmi are an essential element of local life. Annual traditional events: Oluset Beer Festival, Day of Activity for Young People, Day of Old Karelia, Maakuntajuhlat regional festival. All these make the streets of Iisalmi filled with life. At Runni, there’s the Midsummer Night’s celebration. In the early summer, at Koljonvirta, the traditional farm and other machinery of the Savo province is exhibited in August old car and motorcycle enthusiasts meet at the Rompepäivät event at Koljonvirta. In late summer people get together to celebrate the Savolaesen Huumorin Päivä event.
