Kajaani is the administrative centre of the Kainuu Province. This commercial centre of the province of Kainuu has an idyllic appearance of a small town, reflected by the renewed Town Hall market square and the town centre along the riverside.Since the amalgamation of Vuolijoki with Kajaani in 2007, the town’ s population is approximately 38 200. The largest readiness brigade of the Finnish Army, the university area, Kajaani Polytechnic, as well as the numerous schools and colleges contribute to the youthful look of the town. The housing estate by the side of the river, completed for the National Housing Fair of 2001 is a bonus to the aspect of the town. The most important field of industry is the electronics industry and we also provide other services.
The ruins of the Kajaani castle, the only tar canal in Finland, together with Lussitupa and Paltaniemi wooden church, represent our historical heritage. Elias Lönnrot, who collected and published Finnish folklore, and Eino Leino, the famous poet, had their roots in Kajaani. Today you can visit a house in Paltaniemi which is built after Eino Leino's childhood home Hövelö. The monument of Finland's former president Urho Kekkonen stands between the church of Kajaani and the Orthodox church, known for its iconostases.
Modern architecture is represented by the Kaukametsä Congress- and cultural centre. Other interesting places to visit include the Kainuu Museum and the old Town Hall and Art Museum by the market square.
Annual events include the dance event Kajaani Tanssii in February and the poetry happening Kajaanin Runoviikko and street market in July. The municipal theatre of Kajaani enjoys national esteem. There are also two popular summer theatres, one in the town proper and the other in Vuolijoki.
The Vimpelinlaakso Sports Centre, Kajaani Hall and the new and the new The Sport Park of Kajaani provide good facilities for sports and exercise.
It is easy to come to Kajaani - by car, train or air. Seven hotels and a full range of other types of accommodation offer plenty of alternatives.
Welcome to innovative Kajaani!
