Places to visit
Along Taidekatu (the Street of Arts) you will find, among other things, a café, Handicraft Square, Lapinlahti Art Museum, the Emil Halonen Museum, pieces of sculpture, the Aurinkotuuli by Stefan Lindström, the wooden church from 1880 and the Library. The Väisälänmäki culture and nature trail (about 3 km) near where Halonen and Järnefelt painted their masterpieces, offers a panorama of the lakes and fields of the province of Savo. Along the signposted trail, which is provided with plenty of information, there is a lookout tower, a lean-to with a campfire place as well as a café in a herdsman’s hut. The Museum of Resettlement in Alapitkä with its sauna and cowshed is an evocative monument dedicated to post-war Finland and the memory and daily life of the men and women who reclaimed the forests to wrest a living for their families. The Railway Station of Lapinlahti restored to its imposing state of the early 20th century, now houses a railway station, a bus station and a hotel. Väärni vicarage is a superbly renovated old vicarage and the birth place of the writer Juhani Aho. Guided walks, coffee, lunch and programmes for groups by appointment. The Sculpting Atelier Luova Puu and the Galleria Café provide an opportunity to watch close at hand the process of sculpting and the finished products of the process. The exhibition also includes works by other artists.
