The cultural history of Pieksämäki reaches back thousands of years. The location of Pieksämäki at the junction of major waterways contributed to the habitation of the region as early as the Stone Age.


Pieksämäki offers memorable places to visit and experiences to the whole family. Throughtout the year changing exhibitions are arranged of the products of local and national artists at Poleeni culture centre and the old vicarage Sylvi located in the town centre, at the Kanttila administrative building in Naarajärvi as well as in private galleries. Nukkekoti, the Doll’s House is the home of fairy-tales and adventure, where children can play, create and experience the magic of the puppet theatre. The Puppet Theatre and Toy “Museum” Unelma stages changing exhibitions for people of all ages. At the nostalgic Savo Railway Line Museum the century-long history of the Savo Railway line is presented. The church of Ristikivi located in the premises of Partaharju activity centre is the only open air church in the country, providing an opportunity for the visitor to enjoy the serenity of nature. The church of the rural municipality built in 1752, is a spectacular landmark.

There are numerous handicraft and gift shops in the region. The Anola wine farm sells its own products, hand painted ceramic articles are sold by Leena Heinonen, stone ornaments by Tarukivi, antiques by Löytöluukku and fresh-made bakery products by Moilanen Ltd. The Kähverä gallery& shop provides a wide selection of beautiful giftware articles as well as articles for daily use.

The natural environment around Pieksämäki provides plenty of interesting spots for recreation. The nature trails at Nikkarila Forestry Institute and at Partaharju acquaint the visitors with the variegated landscape of the region. The canoeing route of Naarajoki river with a total length of 110 km, starts from the Lomatrio camping site and continues via Haukivuori up to Kangasniemi. Divided in smaller lengths, the route provides splendid canoeing adventures for the whole family. Linnakivi, Finland’s second largest boulder of rock, dating to the the Ice Age in Mataramäki. There is a new bird-watching facility TELEKKÄ. on the shore of Lake Tuomiojärvi, which is the richest lake in the province in terms of the number of species of birds nesting in the area. For fishing enthusiasts there is a large number of good fishing places and for those interested in horse-riding there are several riding stables, the nearest of them, the Mäenpää estate horse riding school is located in the town centre.
