Kuusamo, home to c.16 997 inhabitants, is one of Finland’s most popular holiday destinations. The Kuusamo landscape is characterized by spectacular natural features such as rapids, fells, canyons, large lakes and rivers.

Kuusamo is well known for the Ruka tourist centre and its superb natural scenery. The most famous natural attractions are Kiutakoski Rapids in the Oulanka National Park and Jyrävä Rapids in Juuma. Most of the Bear’s Trail (80 km, the shorter trail 12 km) runs in the Oulanka National Park. Along the trail there are wilderness cabins, lean-to shelters and camp fire sites freely available for hikers. The nature destinations of southern Kuusamo include Julma-Ölkky lake canyon, Iivaara hill and Närängänvaara hill.

Popular places to see include the Oulanka Nature Centre and the Kuusamo centre of Large Carnivores, Kuusamo tropical spa, Hannu Hautala Center of Nature Photography, the Holy Cross Church of Kuusamo and the Ruka summersled slope. The downhill skiing season in Ruka lasts to the beginning of June. There are good shopping venues at Ruka and the town centre. The fishing gear shop Kuusamon Uistin as well as the Riipinen game food shop are near the town centre.
