The municipality of Muonio is located in Western Lapland, under the arm of ‚Maiden Finland‘. For its landscape and nature, Muonio is part of the most beautiful Lapland, a turnover zone between Forest Lapland and Fell Lapland. The western border of the municipality consists of River Muonionjoki, which is the main river in the Tornionjoki water course, one of the largest water systems in Europe.
For tourists, Muonio provides both quietness of the wilderness and individual nature tourism services. A visitor has a lot to see and experience all year round: you can participate in white-water rafting or visit a genuine lappish reindeer farm Lapin Kartano, or you can visit Harriniva, a large arctic sledge dog center with some 400 Huskys waiting for you.
In July, the national Salmon Weeks gather participants to Muonio from far and near. This is the time to compete for great prizes with giant salmons. The river Muonionjoki is full of both quiet waters and rapids, as well as mystical hauling places. Altogether over 100 kilometres of fishing waters to try with one permit!
When the first snow falls in October, the snowcovered and illuminated skiing tracks of Olos attract the skiers. During the winter season, the well maintained ski track network and a number of slopes invite you on skis. Motor sledge, arctic dog sledge and reindeer safaris as well as winter fishing are great fun in wintertime!
