Welcome to Pajala - a municipality of culture in the Nordkalotten region
The municipality of Pajala in the Torne River Valley close to the border with Finland is marked by an atmosphere of multi-culturalism, the identity of the people of the valley being molded by three cultural traditions, Finnish, Sami and Swedish. Pajala offers visitors peace of nature, tasty Torne Valley food and warm hospitality. The municipality has a total area of 8 000 square kilometres and a population of 6 900 people living in 80 villages.
Sights:
The world's largest sundial is today in the Torne Valley north of the polar circle. The location of Pajala, 67,21 N, 23,28 E, makes a circular sundial possible because the midnight sun revolves both above and below the horizon.
The Laestadius Building home of Lars Levi Laestadius, the first vicar of Pajala. Laestadius won fame as preacher, educator, champion of the temperance movement, botanist and scientist.
A station point of the Struve triangulation chain included in the Unesco World Heritage List is located at Jupukka in Pajala.
In Pajala visitors get an opportunity to follow in the footsteps of the best-selling writer Mikael Niemi and visit some of the places he described in his book.
