The historical town of Raahe is located by the northern Gulf of Bothnia. This beautiful old town proudly cherishes its mariti me heritage but, at the same time, steel industry, information technology and culture contribute to its modern appearance.
Places to visit - new and old
Old Raahe is one of the best preserved 19th century wood-built towns in Finland. In Pekkatori Square Map the statue of Per Brahe, founder of the town, has stood for over a century peering down on the sea (designed by Valter Runeberg 1888). Raahe Museum Map is the oldest local heritage museum in Finland. The majority of the more than 10000 artefacts are associated with the era of sailing ships. The treasures of the museum include the world’s oldest diving suit, the “Old Gentleman of Raahe” made of leather in the 18th century as well as wooden church sculptures from the first church of Raahe from the 17th century.
Sovelius House Map a late shipowner’s home, is furnished in the upper middle-class style. Raahe granite church Map was built in 1912. The altarpiece was painted by artist Eero Järnefelt in 1926. Saloinen local museum its exhibits and buildings illustrate the history of agriculture and fishing. In Saloinen church you will find wooden sculptures and a saint reliquary from the 15th century. The archeological relic of Kastelli this formation of five stone circles is the largest of the so-called giants’ castles discovered in the Ostiobothnia region. The Ojala home museum is a former prosperous farmhouse of the Northern Ostrobothnia region. At Rauhanpirtti in Olkijoki Sweden and Russia signed a cease-fire agreement which put an end to the war between the two countries. The stone arch bridge of Pattijoki which dates back to 1897 and is today a protected building monument, was built of stacked stones on a route dating back hundreds of years. The Machinery Museum of Pattijoki exhibits a large variety of motor vehicles and old-time working machines.
The Culture and Congress Centre at the Kauppaporvari commercial centre Map is an excellent venue for concerts, congresses and training sessions, (08) 439 3232. The Myötätuuli Gallery housed in the Kauppaporvari building stages monthly changing art exhibitions. The sculpture park of sculptor Kari Juva was opened in the town hall park in 2008. In the sculpture park of Matti Lepistö in Pattijoki there are 200 sculptures in concrete. There is a swimming hall with spa facilities Map, including a gym, a bowling alley as well as a tennis and a squash court. The view over Raahe and the off-shore islands can be admired at the lookout terrace Map on the top of the water tower.
