The hill ranges opening for view in Tervola give a premonition of the fells of Lapland. The municipality of Tervola lies along the lower reaches of the river Kemijoki in the so-called Triangle of Lapland (Kemi-Tornio-Rovaniemi).
The river Kemijoki divides the municipality in two sections so it is natural that there is population and services on both sides of the river. Through the ages the river has been the mainstay of the people, an inexhaustible supply of fish and a thoroughfare in summer and in winter. At present there has been a steady increase in the recreational use of the river.
