The Archipelago Sea, which in many respects is a unique sea in the world, is an impressive tourist target. The largest island in Finland, is located in the south-eastern part of the Archipelago Sea.
Good connections from Kemiönsaari and the outer islands to the mainland by car and by ferry have contributed to the economic life and overall development of the island communities. People go in for cultural pursuits and handicraft. There are a large number of attractions, such as the verdant inner island and the bare rocks and skerries of the outer islands. The fishing and hunting traditions of the island communities extend far back into the Stone Age. The sailing and trading route of the Vikings passed through the archipelago.
In the 17th century the Swedish kings became interested in Kemiönsaari. Axel Oxenstierna, Chancellor of Sweden, established a school and iron works which form the basis of the numerous present-day attractions of the islands, some of them unique. Welcome to Kemiönsaari region with its 3000 islands and skerries, its untouched nature and wild scenery. You will be treated with warm hospitality.

The gateway to the Kimitoön
The agricultural region of Kimitoön lies in the northern part of the island. It is easy to reach if you arrive from the north or the east. The road to the centre runs through an old cultural landscape. There you can find a large variety of services and get acquainted with islands history as well as obtain practical advice from the tourist information office on your way to the outer islands.
The most beautiful road in the archipelago extends to the utmost tip of Kasnäs, where the sea and the land meet. This is from where ferries sail to the archipelago, and to the thousands of islands and skerries of Hitis. In the Middle Ages the iron works in Finland were dependent on the island routes. Now holiday makers follow the same routes. A trip offers old ironworks milieus, manor houses, a seaside congress hotel and even a hotel on a lighthouse island in the outer sea.
Seafaring has always played an important role in Kimitoön. In the 16th century stone was shipped to the construction sites of Swedish castles and cathedrals. In the 19th century shipbuilding and peasant sailing were important. When men went out to the sea, women stayed behind to run the farms. People from the mainland came to find work as farm hands. Seafaring and cooperation between the villages continue to play a part in the activities of today.
