Somero is situated halfway along Hämeen Härkätie, the most important road of the early history of Finland, which traces its origins to the Viking period of more than a thousand years ago. This ancient road runs across the woodlands of the province of Häme and the river landscape of the province of Varsinais-Suomi and was used by merchants, pilgrims and even kings. Somero, an active rural town of more than 9500 inhabitants, is only an hour’s drive away from Helsinki, Tampere and Turku. The town’s principal asset is its rich and varied natural environment. The town is traversed by the Paimionjoki River flowing from east to west. The natural attractions include Häntälän notkot, a number of post-glacial deep and winding depressions in the ground, of great scenic beauty and unique in Finland.

Somero has excellent facilities for the pursuit of cultural activities as well as of sports and physical exercise. In Finland Somero is known as the home town of Rauli Badding Somerjoki, Unto Mononen and M.A. Numminen, all of them masters in the field of music. The outdoor dance pavilions Esakallio, Ämyri and Teeriharju receive every summer a total attendance of almost 100000. In the field of athletics, a special mention is due to Seiväskarnevaalit, an annual pole vault competition named after Pentti Nikula, former European champion.
