Houtskär is a part of the town of Weståboland. It has a total of 1680 islands and skerries surrounded by blue expanses of the sea and separated by green straits. Finland’s South-Western Archipelago has often been referred to as ”the most beautiful beautiful archipelago in the world”. Houtskär is located in the middle of this paradise. The forest-covered major islands (20 of them are inhabited) and bare outer islands, wide open seas and lush sounds contribute to the diverse scenery in Houtskär. There are plenty of rare plants and birds.
About 670 islanders form a lively community providing a variety of services. Local cultural life in Houtskär is particularly active, the only folk high school in the archipelago is in Houtskär. Houtskär is the only municipality in the Turku Archipelago where Swedish is the only official language. However, people speaking only Finnish get along well.
