Founded in 1652, the town of Jakobstad is well known as the birth place of J.L. Runeberg, the national poet of Finland. Swedish and Finnish are spoken in Jakobstad and living bilinguality is an essential element of the town. Today, Jakobstad is widely known for its boat yards Nautor and Baltic Yacht.

ATTRACTIONS:

The birth of the Arctic Museum Nanoq can be ascribed to the efforts of PenttiKronqvist, a polar traveller, and a large group of volunteers. The museum has a large collection of arctic hunting and fishing equipment and weapons and soapstone art products of Kanadian inuits. In addition, changing exhibitions are staged on arcticthemes.

The Jakobstad Museum presents the past of the town, in which navigation and sea trade have played an important part. The most important single building of the museum is the Malm House, the ancient home of an old family of ship owners. The museum also includes the exhibition hall at the old tobacco storehouse, the Runeberg cottage, the hunting and fishing hut of the Runeberg family, and the Mother Westman cottage, where the poet first went to school. Other museums include the Motor Museum, the Chichory Museum and the Pedersöre Local History Museum.

The Aspegren Garden dating from the 1750’s, the Botanical Garden School Garden with hundreds of species of plants as well as numerous well kept parks – all these contribute to the green and verdant image of Jakobstad.

Fäboda recreational area
is located 8 km away from the town. The open sea, the long beaches, warm cliffs, the scent of the pine tree wood as well as the nature trail and the summer restaurant leave an indelible mark on the memory of visitors.

The Old Harbour area contains a number of attractions, such as a beach with a diving tower, a waterpark with a café, the summer café Pavis, the galeas Jacobstads Wapen, the dock of the schooner Vega and the piers for water-taxes.

The Skata area is one of the most important wooden house districts in Finland. The oldest of its modest houses, originally built for seamen and workers of the tobacco mill date from the early 19th century, most of them are from 1860 -1920. The area can be entered through the imposing archway next to the clock ball of the Strengberg tobacco factory.
