Nurmes represents genuine Northern Karelia at its best where traditions and peace of nature coexist with other types of holiday attractions, such as golf, summer theatre, canoeing and Karelian pastries, to mention but a few.
Attractions
Puu-Nurmes and Vanha kauppala together form a pittoresque district of old wood houses beautifully located in the town centre on the ridge between Lake Pielinen and Lake Nurmesjärvi. On the market place there is, Laulupuu a memorial commemorating the composer P.J. Hannikainen. On the premises of Nurmes Hall are the town library, the Tyko Gallery, the local museum, and Kino Hannikainen. The Lutheran Church, the Orthodox Church. On the Church Ridge, where the town and the district of Porokylä meet, are the graves and monument of the war dead, the old church staple and other memorials connected with local history. Bomba House with its yard, the replica of a large house of Old Karelia, is a diverse centre of tourism. Ikola open-air museum presents local history. The wilderness milieu of Kourukoski includes Kruununtorppa croft museum, an artisan’s workshop in an old farm building, a wartime smoke sauna, the largest Lap hut in Finland with a shingled roof and a wilderness chapel.
